  • Civil War Battle Reenactment

I'm still working on 'developing and processing' all of the photos from this event, but I wanted to get a few up on the web for friends to see.  Besides, at this rate, I may never finish ALL of the photos.  Blah.

What follows are a variety of shots from an American Civil War Camp and Battle Reenactment in Zoar, OH, back a couple weekends ago.

These first few were from a cavalry demonstration prior to the battle:

    Now some from the battle:

Confederate gun crew waiting for the action to start

Confederate skirmishers sneaking into the area

The Union Army entering the field, facing the Confed skirmishers (focus in the foreground is on the Confed cavalry officer - notice the gaudy spectators on the other side of the field? : ) )

Confederate cannon in action (my favorite shot)

New Confed force surprises and outflanks the Union troops (you can see some Union guys retreating, in the foreground)

A wider perspective on the battle

This soldier put the reins in his teeth so he could reload his weapon

The Union contingent eventually won the battle, pushing the Confederates off the field

    Other random shots:

Eventually, I'll have a web album with most of the photos, and I'll post a link for those who'd like to see the rest.

    Cheers!

  • Weekly Photo Challenge - B&W and color versions of one photo

This week's Weekly Photo Challenge is "Anything in Color and then in Black & White" -- a good challenge, I like B&W because it emphasizes light/shadow and texture more than color, in my opinion.

My wife recently set me to the task of photographing our son's incredibly long, and beautiful, eyelashes.  So far, this is the shot we like best, and I think I like the B&W version better than the color version.  Feel free to share your opinion.  (Apologies if it doesn't fit the screen - the shot was originally formatted & uploaded for a different forum).

  • Weekly Photo Challenge - Something old, something new

My entry for this week's Weekly Photo Challenge:  "Something Old, Something New:"

On the left:  a Lipca Twin Lens Reflex medium format film camera, with a snazzy fold-down waist-level viewfinder.  On the right:  my only two-years-old Sony digital SLR.  Photography has come a long way... only I should've had a pinhole camera in this shot somewhere...

On a related note, some hobbyist photographers have been using their DSLRs and a macro lens attached to old medium format cameras like the one on the left, in order to take shots through the waist-level viewfinder of the old cameras.  The result is a digital picture that looks like it was taken using the older, non-digital, camera.  (the viewfinders on these old TLR cameras are usually dusty -- giving the impression of the camera's age -- and the old lenses and the square images of a TLR have a certain look to them that can enhance a photo's interest).  I'll post an example if I get a chance to.
